Record, Moving and Other Things

September 27, 2008 – 9:01 am

i know i originally said something about late summer the new record being done and out. well, here we are, first week of fall, and no record. first, i have been working on it. i’ve been releasing some new material that may (or may not) appear on it, so that’s good. that’s progress. second, the reason things have slowed down on this front is several fold:

1. life stuff – i had to find a new place to move because of my living arrangements were changed. i spent a good part of the latter part of the summer looking for some place to live. well, 3 weeks ago i did that and just 2 days ago i signed a lease. so, instead of living in Cambridge MA, i will be moving just over the river to Charlestown MA, right on the water. its a lovely spot, in a new building, not too far from the USS Constitution (if you know the area).

2. day job. i work as a software architect (which is nothing more than a very senior engineer) and i’ve been running around like a chicken who’s lost its head on several projects. so many nights when i get home all i have the energy for is to sit down in front of the xbox360 and either race around a virtual race track (courtesy of forza2) or kill digital versions of germans (circa 1944)… you can find me on xbox live via: blinder0×000000.

3. other projects. i have to keep busy. my mind is a non-stop project making machine… and because of that i have been working on my old website project (diysearch) doing a complete re-write of everything and making it a much better thing. i’m nearly done with it. what does this have to do with music? simple really, its all about bandwidth.

so where does that leave the record?

simple, its still in progress, got some good material for it, and the creative direction is getting more and more solid. in fact, i have a few collaborators who will be helping out make it a reality. such as my friend patrick, he will be lending his ears to make it a better finished production and possibly also providing some instrumentation as well. then there’s my best friend sol, who will be helping complete the over all package in that there will be a companion zine (with the CD) that will serve as a vehicle to put all of the songs into a context via the written word. the vinyl edition will have the same but as a poster most likely. i like packages. i think if you are going to get a physical thing it should just be more than a piece of plastic and aluminum, it should be an experience. and that’s what i’m trying to put together.

there’s a theme (ugh, just what we need, themed records) i know, but i just like the imagery of the sea, the ocean, shipwrecks, the traditions and lore of the ocean. i know appleseed cast did something very similar i also think polvo did the same. well, hell, if everyone else is doing it, why can’t we? (hat tip to the cranberries there)

i mean, this record project isn’t about moving units (or making sense, a special hat tip to pedro the lion there) but more about just making something. i have to make things. selling lots of them is never part of the equation.
