Something Not New – Rough Cut

March 21, 2008 – 7:49 pm

As I mentioned yesterday, I worked up a rough cut of this song I have been working on.

I would stress that this is a very rough cut. The song is NOT complete, I just want to put this out there, and maybe get some feedback.

The idea is simple, the images and concept is that of a life spent waiting, biding time till the end, and we get to watch from start to finish.

sorry blinder, looks like you already have it covered. i guess i hadn't reloaded the page in a while so i didn't see your comment.
  • My only complaint is that, near the opening, everything seemed compressed into the same frequency range. Or something. All I really know is that at 2:30AM, I couldn't distinguish any of the instruments in that area.

Other than that, it's a nice, smooth song. Like an audio massage, it releases the tension from your muscles and mind, like the final moments before falling asleep.

i've listened to it a couple times trying to figure out what it could be that you're hearing. as best i can tell it's that the reverb is adding some EQ to the drum loop that overlaps with the space of the bass sound, especially the low tom sound. because i like the way both parts sound, i'm not sure how (or even if) it should change. i probably like the way the drum loop sounds just a little better, but then the bass sound is more integral to the song as a whole.

i suppose the effect could be reduced on the drum loop or maybe some parametric could cut some overlap or boost something outside the overlap. i'm sure mr. blinder already knows a lot more of those tricks than i do though. plus i'm still not sure the overlap is bad. i like the way everything starts out sounding the same and then gets some clarity a little ways in.

on repeated listens, i really hear the constant waiting.

you may not be way off base, i was trying to make it fall into a limited frequency range, but perhaps i should expand that a little, i mean the bass line is consistent throughout the entire song, i never changed that, but perhaps the junk drum sample could use some attention, fall into a higher register, so that the piano and guitar sit in that low-mid frequency range, where the all the warmth is, and the drums are to be more like machines.

but thanks for listening, good comment, good critical listening

i love love love the balance of traditional instruments with electronic elements. really great tune.

thank you! yes, that was my goal is to create a blend of non-electronic with the electronic to create the progression from birth to death. does that make sense?

thanks for listening, glad i did something right.
