Writing Today

March 15, 2008 – 9:56 pm

Well, aside from sleeping most of the day, I actually managed to spend a good chunk of time in the studio today, writing and working on a song. Its called “Something Not New.” I tracked drums today, and did some guitar work on it. I actually got 2 tracks of guitars on it, so I’m going to consider that a win.

Its crazy how much sleep I require. I don’t get it. I sleep a lot. It might be the depression. I have a major depressive disorder, and have been fighting depression for the better part of my life, well since I was 15 or so. So I slept in till about 11:00 a.m. this morning, got up, had a bowl of cereal, poked around on the interwebs then fell asleep on a chair, then dragged myself back to bed, where I didn’t wake till about 4 p.m.

Had to run a few errands but then got back and worked on the song. I like where its going so far. Its still pretty shapeless right now, but it starts off nice and melancholy, with a nice machine-like quality set against a soft and warm bass and piano line, and some guitars to fill out the sound a bit. I put down the basic drum tracks, used a nice wooden sounding kit, using pretty simple beats, with a few jazz-like ghost hits to add some more texture than what I usually do. I may have a rough mix of this in a few days… I also think this song may have some vocals on it. The vocals will just be another “voice” in the song, an instrument to further aid in adding texture. I think this song may need them. I have a vocalist in mind, just have to figure out what should be sung and how they would fit into the overall structure. Well, since this song has no real structure yet, that should be an interesting exercise.

Oh well, another day finished. I wonder if this record will be any good.
